David Young's Charity was set up in 1860 to aid the poor relatives of the Young Family. By 1970 there being no more applicants, Mr Young sought advice from the Charity Commissioners who suggested that the St Vincent dePaul might administer the Charity. In 1978 a new scheme was agreed and the National Council of the St Vincent de Paul Society appointed four Trustees and the first grants were distributed in June 1978.

Preference is usually given to help individuals rather than groups. To enable the trustees to make the right decision, please give as much information as possible on the circumstances, possible involvement of the SVP conference and support already given or promised. Trustees give careful consideration to all applications, agreeing whether or not the case matches the criteria of the Charity.

The David Young's Charity is a separate registered charity and is therefore able to give assistance to SVP members who find themselves in difficult financial circumstances. As with all applications, any help is strictly confidential. Applications should be forwarded through Conference Presidents or District Council Presidents.

Investments: The funds handed over by the Young Family in the 1970's is the main source of income.

Donations: in 2021, donations amounted to £100 This was given by SVP conferences, district and central councils and many generous benefactors. These donations enable the Charity to help in areas where even a little extra can make a big difference.

The Charity received 23 applications for assistance during 2021 and £10,940 was distributed in aid.

2021 was another difficult year for everyone. Uncertainty with regard to closures of schools and businesses left many people both financially and mentally distressed. Home: The charity has provided financial assistance, usually through SVP conferences, to individuals who suffer from problems such as domestic abuse, loss of employment and rent arrears. A charity helping disabled individuals to lead fulfilling lives within a safe and secure community has been an ongoing beneficiary. Abroad: Some financial assistance has been given to UK charities working in other countries. Support was given to provide various forms of transport for medical and spiritual assistance to remote areas. A project in India to provide basic housing for families (a cause similar to the almshouses originally provided by David Young's bequest) continued to be supported.

As always, the Trustees are very grateful to St Vincent de Paul Society National Office for forwarding mail. The Trustees would like to express their ongoing thanks to Conferences and Councils for allowing the Charity to share in the care of those they visit. In November each year, Mass is offers for the deceased members of the Young family and all those who have given or received assistance through the David Young's Charity.
